Who's Who in Wine: Mapping the Boston Wine Festival

There is a certain way that Chef Daniel Bruce at the Boston Harbor Hotel goes about his work.

He over-delivers. At the opening festivities for the Boston Wine Festival on Friday night, for example, I counted no fewer than five passed appetizers (passed generously) that in themselves amounted to a meal. But there was also the buffet -- with two or three salads, three or four sides, and at least three mains. And there was the heaving cheese board. And there were the 50+ wines being poured at stations around the perimeter of the room. And And And.

He is thorough. As in, cheesecake on the dessert buffet. And lemon. And fruit. And chocolate. And nuts. And just about any other ingredient or entry you'd find in the dessert chapter of your most comprehensive cookbook.

He orchestrates. For the next three months or so, he'll be teeing up what amounts to a who's who in the world of wine. Browse the calendar of Boston Wine Festival wine dinners and events from now until April 1, and you'll find yourself face to face with people and legends and producers you may have only heard about.

Here are just a few. It's proof positive that Chef Bruce is doing his part -- significantly more than his part -- to put Boston on the world of wine map. And to put you in very close proximity to the center of that world.
